about

"In the realm of solo piano music, one of my influences has been the Grammy-award winning artist Peter Kater. I first found out about Peter in the 1980s, when the New Age solo piano movement really blossomed, with other artists such as George Winston. I had always wanted to see Peter live, but for many years he didn't tour very much, as he was quite busy in the studio. In recent years he has resumed touring, and I really wanted to catch one of his concert dates.

In August 2018, my partner, singer Natalie Brown and I were able to see Peter at a concert in Brooklyn. It was great to meet him after listening to his music for the past 30 years. At the concert, he did a lot of storytelling and invited people to come lie underneath the piano while he played. He was so warm and kind, and he's really good at melodies, which gives the listener something to hang on to, besides just beautiful chords on the acoustic piano. Natalie and I got to hang with Peter a little bit after the show, and we had a wonderful date night evening in Brooklyn. As we drove home, I started hearing ideas for a song in my head. We got home about 3 am, and I went straight into my studio, turned on the computer, sat down at the keyboard, and recorded this improvisation. I thought it was good enough to include on my 2018 solo piano release, Christmas Time. I hope you enjoy it!"
